Prognostic value of minimal excitability of facial nerve in Bell's palsy.

چکیده
Nerve excitability is useful for prognosis in Bell's palsy. Minimal excitability values (MEV) were obtained by stimulating the facial nerve and recording the effective current (mA) required to evoke a minimal visible contraction of frontalis, orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and mentalis muscles respectively. Serial MEVs were performed on 100 patients with facial palsy, of whom 87 were followed for six months or to complete recovery; 61 patients were treated with steroids of whom 57 had good recovery. Serial MEVs were not only useful for prognosis, but also helpful in regulating the dosage of prednisone.

Management of Synkinesis and Asymmetry in Facial Nerve Palsy: A Review Article
Introduction: The important sequelae of facial nerve palsy are synkinesis, asymmetry, hypertension and contracture; all of which have psychosocial effects on patients. Synkinesis due to mal regeneration causes involuntary movements during a voluntary movement. Previous studies have advocated treatment using physiotherapy modalities alone or with exercise therapy, but no consensus exists on the ...
متن کاملEarly Prognostic Value of Electrophysiological Tests in Bell's Palsy – Estimating the Duration of Clinical Recovery
Bell's palsy is the most frequent disease of the seventh cranial nerve, with a good prognosis. More than 70% patients attain complete clinical recovery, with no noticeable residua. Persistent sequellas are usually noted in cases with profound axonal loss only. Electrophysiological tests may offer valuable information in defining the severity of nerve injury and a possible subsequent disfunction...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To evaluate the prognostic and predictive value of electroneuronography (ENoG) in acute severe inflammatory facial paralysis, including Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS). STUDY DESIGN Prospective observational study. METHODS Patients with acute severe facial paralysis of House-Brackmann (H-B) grade IV or worse and diagnosed with Bell's palsy or RHS were enrol...
متن کاملManagement of Facial Synkinesis with a Combination of BTX-A and Biofeedback: A Randomized Trial
Introduction: Synkinesis and facial asymmetry due to facial nerve palsy are distressing conditions that affect quality of life. Unfortunately, these sequelae of facial nerve palsy are unresolved. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a combination of biofeedback therapy and botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection for the management of synkinesis and asymmetry of facial muscles. ...
متن کاملA View of the Therapy for Bell's Palsy Based on Molecular Biological Analyses of Facial Muscles.
OBJECTIVE Details regarding the molecular biological features of Bell's palsy have not been widely reported in textbooks. We genetically analyzed facial muscles and clarified these points. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed genetic analysis of facial muscle specimens from Japanese patients with severe (House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system V) and moderate (House-Brackmann facial nerve g...
